Turnip News Turnip Festival – The Provincetown Independent Jose Veraso October 7, 2024 Three-year-old James Colantropo of Eastham holds a portrait drawn by caricaturist Susan Festa at the Turnip Festival last weekend. Behind him, Carmella Alfano takes guesses on the weight of the tuber on display at the entrance to the Eastham Public Library where most of the festival events unfolded this year. The winner of the 2023 Enormous Turnip Contest was Koby Caplan, a visitor who guessed its weight exactly: it weighed 19 lbs. 2 oz. — “The biggest turnip I’ve ever seen,” said turnip maven and Eastham outreach librarian Marianne Sinopoli, an organizer of the event. The turnip was returned to Judy Scanlon of Orleans, who grew it at her Lake Farm Gardens. It went back to Scanlon so more people could see it at her stand at the Orleans Farmers Market. Prizes were $50 gift certificates at Agway of Orleans.
